How do you test the cooling fan on an Eiger?
#1
I picked up a used 2006 Eiger 400 4x4 with 66 miles on it last weekend for $2800 and I have road it about 5 miles in the field next to our house but I have not seen the fan come on yet. It's been about 65 degrees out when we road but I would think the fan should have came on at least once. Can you hear the fan if you are riding and it comes on? Any help would be great.. oh and I did test all the fuses with a multimeter and they are all good. I see two wires coming off the fan and they are connected to the plug at the harness. Thanks for the help!

Well you really gotta get our Outlander warmed up before she'll turn on the fan. 5 miles of just cruising might not do it, especially when its cooler outside. Usually I can feel a noticeable amount of heat coming from the engine compartment on our Outty before the fan will turn on.
You will know if it doesn't work because the engine overheat light will come on (if you have one. I think the Eiger's do, right?). We had overheating problems on our Outlander for a while and I found out the fan wasn't turning on due to a bad thermostat. Once I replaced it though, its been fine ever since.
So I wouldn't worry about it yet!

On the fan there is a hose, see if it is connected. When it is cool I can ride for a good while before mine kicks on. If you are riding slow in the woods, just creeping around it will come on sooner. I had some trash get in the fan in a deep hole and it blew the fuse. You might just change the fuse to be safe.

The Eiger runs pretty cool without the fan, so it takes some tough conditions to have it kick on. Low speed hauling on a hot day is the most likely thing to have it get hot enough to start the fan. You can definately hear the fan, especially at low speeds. I felt the same way as you several years ago. I put the Eiger in the garage, started it up and let it idle. With no air movement, it still too about 1/2 hour to cut in the fan. I forget what the temp. for fan operation is, but back then I got the number fromthe dealer and put a thermeter on it. It stayed right inthe guidelines.

I own an '03 Eiger and both of my brother-in-laws own '07 Eigers. The fans don't come on very often. Oddly enough, mine comes on when I am plowing snow, regardless of how cold it is outside. I think the low speed back and forth heats up the machine and the lack of air flow made it hot enough to kick on the fan. Also, check your fuse to make sure it hasn't blown.
Edit: Sorry, saw you already checked your fuses.

5 Miles won't get it hot enogh to kick the fan on. You need to put it under a load for a long period of time. I have Suzuki's and have not head of problems with the fan on the Eigers. As long as your temp light does not come on I would not worry about it.

On a oil cooler the fan is just for "assist" anyways, the oil cooler still does its job, my 89 350 Yamaha Big Bear had a oil cooler with no fan period and it never over heated in its gazillion miles that it went through. Some air cooled atvs have no oil cooler let alone a fan.

Well we put about 70 miles on the machine this weekend and the fan did come on from time to time as it should. The machine performed very well in everything from mud to the trails. Thanks all!
