#1
I have a 2003 kfx 400...same as the z 400 and need to replace my front shocks..do you guys think that going with newer z400 shocks with rebound and compression adj. is a good idea and how much difference will they make from the pogo sticks i have now. I ride mostly xc with a little mx..or should i buy a used pair of elka piggybacks for a few hundred more..thanks Brian

Well the new rezzie shocks are better, no question. They were the best stock shocks on the market at the time and still compare well to some of today's shocks.
However, they are not so much better that they are worth paying a lot for.
At the same time, I have seen them for sale used pretty cheap. I saw a pair on eBay going to $120 and that is well worth the upgrade. I bought a nearly new rear z400 shock (as a spare) for $65, which is well worth it just to have around. When my current shock gets tired I have a nearly new one to slap on at no cost.
If I could however find some used Elka for a nice price, I would spend the money if you can afford it. There is nothing like a nice set of Elka IMO, they just make them right.
It is really all about your riding style and your budget. If I still raced seriously, I would have replaced my stockers. But I'm an old school guy (read old) who grew up riding things with no suspension or really bad suspension. The stock suspension on my 2005 z400 to me feels like something from a dream. I'm still amazed at what it allows me to do every time I ride.
For stock equipment, they are quite good. They handle XC racing well, and will leap pretty good gaps without a problem...... But if you have a "few hundred more" and can afford it go with the Elka upgrade.
