What is the function of a compression switch?

Hello, I just got a 92' Suzuki Lt F250 Quad 2wd. I purchased it in non running condition. Before I bought It I pulled the cord to make sure it wasnt seized, and it didnt budge. Then the guy flipped a switch on the head near the spark plug and he said, now try it, and it pulled over. I was wondering what is the purpose of this switch and will I have to flip the switch every time before starting it? if so , what a pain in the butt. I tried looking for the owners manual for this thing in pdf format so I could see what the switch is for but have had no luck. If anyone can let me know,. thanks for the help

This is shaft driven, sounds good, as far as I know the elect start works but it just didnt have a battery in it at the time. Cool , thanks guys Does anyone know where I can get the owners manual to this or an online repair guide?

Before 30 years I owned a 50cc semiautomatic JAWA . Everytime I wish to start the engine I hade to keep open a decompression valve on head ( close to sparkplug ) until the right moment ,that is when I had reached the full speed by foot-pedals of piston movement.
It was there to open a 'hole' in head ,leaving the piston free to move up and down quikly and at the release of it the machine had in off pressure to start . Heroic times !!
