1996 king Quad 250 need a little help, questions
#1
I've got a 1996 king quad 250.......runs pretty good no complaints except that I can't get it to idle without putting the choke on to some degree.........I have to keep it revved up when I go into reverse to keep it from dying...........does it need a carb adjustment......if so how do you do it...............or any ideas on this problem.
2nd...............I drive it pretty slow 3 mph...........just fast enough so my dogs can keep up........well when the weather gets real hot..........it will overheat sometimes and the oil light come on.............anything I can do so that it will run cooler at super low speeds.
3rd...........I see they make snow tracks for the atvs...........will these work on my 250.........if so any ideas on brand....................mine is a 4x4.

1. Start with a carb cleaning and and see what you find. Your problem could be as simple as dirt inthe carb or a sticking float.
2. With that kind of use, it's going to overheat, just a tendency of that machine. Some have added a small cooling fan - either actuated by thermostat or controlled directly with an on/off switch. Bottom line is that in hot weather and long term slow-speed running, both the Quadrunner 250 and King Quad 300 will overheat.
3. You are a little underpowered for tracks. Not that it wouldn't work as you could drop into low range but I don't think you'd be happy with the result - especially once you factor in the cost of the tracks (About $4K). IIRC, most track kits require a minimum of 400cc.

theres a idle adjustment screw that I adjust to control the idle on my 95 king quad 300, im sure its the same on yours. in winter i set the idle a little higher. you shouldnt need the choke on for longer than 3 - 5 minutes of warming up. I only had the oil temp light come on once the entire time i've owned mine (bought it new in 96). when is the last time the oil was changed, and what type of oil are you running?

OK guys thanks for the info..............how hard is the carb to rebuild........I've done a few mowers and such........but not a ATV.
Also........can anyone give me more info on the fan setup..........I think I would like to do this
I'm up in Montana and contrary to belief....it does get hot........I very rarely go over 4-5 mph, hardly every get out of 1st gear.............mostly because my dogs can't keep up......they're getting old.......I do a lot atv'ing over and on my property.......pull some steep hills at very low speeds.......and it has overheated twice in the last 5 years.........but at times I can see the heat coming off the engine..........I know heat is the enemy of all engines......so if I can get it to run cooler I'd like that.........my next atv will be liquid cooled.
