oil filter on a 230 roadrunner

Hi, I am new to the forum and 4 stroke quads, I work at a chainsaw shop so I am a 2 stoke tech and no very little about working on 4 stroke engines. I recently was given a 1985 suzuki 230 roadrunner (automatic clutch, gear driven, no rear suspension). I bought some oil filters off ebay and changed the oil today, I took off the cover and put in the new oil filter. My question is does the oil filter just sit in there and then the cover gets bolted back on and thats what holds it in or does it attach to something. sorry if it sounds dumb but I dont want to dammage my quad. hey welcome to the forum!
the hole in the oil filter rests on a little tube inside the housing which is supposed to have an o ring around it. then theres supposed to be a spring between the cover and the other side of the filter which pushes it up against the o ring on the other side.

Yep its a shaft drive, automatic clutch. Hi and low range, this is a 230 roadrunner most of the other ones I have seen are either the quadsports or the same bike as mine just they are called quadrunners instead of roadrunners?
Thanks for the help its in right then, I am afraid that the only machine I owned before this was a 1989 kx250 2 stroke thats all built up for race. I like the quad a lot better than the dirtbike though.

Hey guys how long should it take for the oil to get dirty, I have only driven it three or four miles since I changed the oil and I just got back from a short ride and it already looks a dirty brown color through the oil bubble. What could happen if the oil filter isnt on right, also I thing I might have put in to much oil is it supposed to be at the top of the the sight bubble or halfway. What could happen If I put in to much oil.

As far as the oil getting dirty really quick could the ATV have sat around with no use for several months? If that is the case things could have started to corrode inside and could dirty the oil quickly after being ran again. As far as too much oil you could ruin the rings but that would take a big time overfill. If it is just a little overfull i wouldn't really worry too much.

I have had this for a couple of months I changed the oil before, but not the oil filter. prior to that it had sat for 6 or 7 years. I did drive it for a few months though. As for as oil I put in almost 3 quarts. any Idea how much there is supposed to be.
Could the oil filter not be on right and maybe it isnt filtering the oil.

I really don't think that the filter would make that much of a difference in just a couple miles. Those oil filters are really easy to put on. just slide the rubber end over the little tube hole the spring against the filter and ease the cover over it. The spring on most models should stay on the cover or filter but in time things get wore out and the spring won't stay on anymore. I have noticed an almost instant change in oil color after the first warm up on almost everything that I have ever changed the oil in. In a diesel truck it is amazing how fast the oil turns solid black.
