Hello,

I just recently bought a 1985 Quadsport LT230S. Previous owner said the headlight bulb was just burnt out. Well, I bought a new bulb, and it will not work either.

I did test the bulb on battery voltage, and both filaments work great by themselves.

I started the engine, and measured voltage from ground to each of the socket pins. Each goes from zero to about 0.6 volts , respectively, when either high or low beam is on.

Anyone have thoughts? I am thinking it could be the lightning coil under the stator cover... but the engine runs just fine.

Perhaps I need a manual to check electrical values. Anyone have a factory service manual for this?

Did u test the light bulb in the socket? I will just about bet on the lighting coil under the stator cover being bad. This has nothing to do with the running of the machine,just runs the light. U can find new lighting coils on ebay for pretty cheap

 

Hello, I ordered the service manual, and received it yesterday.

In it, it says to check voltage at the light under certain rpm's. It says if you get no voltage, then replace the lighting coil.

However, isn't it a possibility the voltage regulator bad as well.

Anyone know how to test the lighting coil and the regulator?

I assume the coil needs to be checked for ohms, and if it is infinite then it has an open circuit. I need to trace the wire colors down, because I am not sure the colors of the coil and regulator wires.

All the regulator does is dump excess current to ground when the voltage is exceeded. Seems to me if the regulator is bad, you would get too much voltage instead of zero voltage. But if you want to check it, just unplug it and see if you have voltage then. Its just one wire.

I'm pretty sure your problem is the lighting coil. Those things are almost always bad. You'll probably find a broken wire on the coil when you get it out.

 

Hello, I bought a replacement coil, and went ahead and took the cover off the side of the engine. The old coil ohms was 0.8 and the new one was 1.2 ohms, so I am pretty sure the old coil was OK.

So, I am going to go ahead and install the new coil anyway, but also start tracing down wiring. I have a service manual, but it does not show wire colors, so I will try to dig into it ASAP.

The headlight ON/OFF switch works OK (I tested it)... so the only thing I think it could be is the HIGH/LOW switch or an open wire.

I did verify the ground wire on the headlight fixture has continuity all the way to the ground terminal of the coil, so it has to be wiring somewhere on the hot side of the coil.

The dog-gone previous owner cut some wires way up under the gas tank. There were also several cuts between there and the headlight bucket.

Anyway, I mended the wires, and the headlight works!!!!

 

Hi, i have the same problem on my Lt-F230 except the taillight and the nutral and reverse light still work, every time i put a new bulb in the light it burns out but none of the other lights burn out.
