Any tips on replacing Reverse Gear?

Any tips on replacing Reverse Gear?
Has anyone got a quick guide to replacing the reverse gear? On a LT125 1986 once we lift the lever she grinds into place / sometimes we're lucky other times rearranging the gearbox. I'm use to doing cars not quads. Basically is there anythingI should be weary of? Many thanks
