Default 1987 LT-4WD no spark.

I have a 1987 Lt-4wd quad runner. I bought new after letting it sit for sum 8 years. I decided to get it running since I got sum time on my hands. After stripping the body. Replacing all fluids, pads, rebuilding carb, some bushings and new battery.

The time has come for the smoke test...fresh gas twist of the switch and nothing but the starter spinning .I am not getting a spark good compression. Checking the voltage path and ohms against the service manunal it should be 105 - 160 ohms.Is that right?

I am getting no ohms across the power sorce coil in the stator.( I am assuming it is part of the stator because of how the diagrams shows it.

My question is why would it just open up ? It was running when I parked it. I am thinking about buying a replacement and doing the work myself. Any advice would be helpful.(I've worked on cars and trucks but never indeapth into myATV)

Do I need to remove the engine..Looks like I can pull it from the right side?

Do I need to drain the oil?

What about pickup coil ?

I am thinking about either Electrosport Stator or RMstator.

Any input would be appreciated since this will be my first to be this deep into my ATV.

Thanks,

Brad

You've got to be missing something, check everything before opening up the engine, if it was running when you left it there's not much chance it's gone bad from just setting. Keep digging at it! BTW how many miles are on it?

I've been hoping not to open up the engine. when I was checking is when I found that the starter coil was open ( directly across the coil should be 100 - 160 ohms and it reads meg ohms)

That's what puzzles me I drove it stopped it and 8 years later tried to start it. I guess alot can happen in eight years.

I'll keep digging . Looks to me like you can get to the maginto with out removing the engine. just remove the exhaust and muffler. (now that could be a tricky thing to since it's old and rusty.)

Thanks

Brad

Was the battery completely dead(I'm sure it was)? I know the rectifer can go bad but usually will still let the motor run but the current(12v) will be be much higher, like 13-15v and that might burn out the coil(sparkplug)......rectifer's are not cheap either, I replaced mine(1998 model) and it was $178 shipped, but that was what was wrong with mine.......it caused my lights to be real bright and the coil(sparkplug) started breaking down as the RPM's went up. It wouldn't run much over idle before it would start missing really bad. I would be looking there before opening up the motor!

It would be nice if I could get to to run and check it.. But I have no spark. I've checked the 12vdc path from the battery according to the wiring diagram in the service manual.

the ohms are correct for the pickup coil and the source coil reads OL (open) whne it should read about 100 ohns. and that is with it disconnected from the wiring harness.

Is the "Power Source" wound into the stator? The Suzuki wiring diagram it looks that way.

Brad I'm afraid I can't help you with this......I just don't know and I don't have a manual. Maybe call a dealer and ask the mechanics, I don't know!
