I was on e-bay the other day and you can pick up replacement plastic on the cheap. 10-20 bucks
(I had pulled my plastic off and found 2 areas of the frame that were bashed a bit)
If you used a longer bolt and layered it that would probably be a good option.
You could use a dremel tool to trim the connections and oblong the pilot holes.

Double strength with light weight and cheap replacement cost.
