need help ... just picked up a 86suzuki 230s

Default need help ... just picked up a 86suzuki 230s

well where do i start.... first of all it has a new carb kit in it and its tuned in but it runs for about a 1/4mi then dies but its not a fuel die it dosent bog down or backfire just quits even if i down shift and pop clutch it wont run it tries but no luck... sits for 30sec to a min and had a friend pull me cause i was tired of kickin the damn thing popped clutch fired right up but it does the same thing everytime runs for a bit and runs great no chuggin or poppin or boggin then dies....ok...... my though when i took a look at the stater there was oil in the bottom of that area i dont know anything about atv at all learning as i go seems like there should not be any oil in there at all or am i wrong plz help ive had the carb off 50 times cause i thought it was flooded or not getting enough gas this is the only thing i can think of

Still sounds like a fuel problem. Try checking the fuel drain screw at bottom of carb right after it dies that would prove if you do or dont have a fuel problem. Then check if you have fuel flow out of your tank if all this checks out then start with spark issues.

Default thanks for the info but...

ive done those things after it dies i can kick it and it starts right up but should i see any oil when i take off the stater cover when i popped it loose there was oil in the bottom of where the stater is and whats up with that decompression thing how should i use that is it just to ease kickin the damn thing also there is a hose coming off the carb and it goes under the tank but not hooked to it theres no where to hook it to the tank i unhooked it from the carb and blew thru it to see where it went and it looks like it ends in the frame under the tank

Check the fuel tank breather for clogs. Another thing is after it dies(and you get stopped) open the gas cap and listen for a short rush of air. What happens is the tank vapor locks after a short time if the breather is clogged. It will run fine again once the pressure releases until it starts all over again.

the tube coming off the tank is clear and the other tube going nowhere off the carb is clear also it just runs into the frame under the tank i havent checked the ones coming off the gearbox ill look at those later today
