1987 lt230 help

The 230 is a decent little motor, but it is no power monger. I would go with an exhaust, intake, and rejet. That woke mine up back in the day. The big bore would be an option also. Just remember that if you start beating your buddy, he will upgrade and you will end up right where you are now, lol.

You rebuilt the top end. Normally, a person rebuilds the top end when there is scoring on the cylinder walls. If there was scoring, I would assume that since its already has one top end rebuild, with a 230 you will probably need another one within a year because the badly made stock rod. So if you are going big bore, I would get a better rod in that thing.

try updating your air filter, exhaust , sprocket combo, and run a higher octane fuel. also to get a higher compression ratio remove the base gasket from the jug, lightly sand the sealing surface and use a little amount of high temp RTV to seal it back up. before my crash a few weeks ago i roasted a 300ex that was 12 years newer than my 230. i think a 13/39 or 13/37 sprocket combo will do good for you.

ebay has a couple of DG exhausts. And say no to the big bore unless you have big bucks to spend. a big bore will require a new carb , new cam stage 2, valve springs , crank rebuild, cylinder head work and EBC dirt racer or dirt digger clutches. there is alot involved with doing a big bore.

Do you know where i can get the stage 2 cam, and Clutches. I have already planned to get the big bore this summer and sending my head to the guys on ebay who sell it, and sending my bottom end to vince. Also i have a carb in mind its a mikuni vm28-418 flat side carb, will that work. My current engine is .60 over.
Thx,

the 13/39 is a good all around combo for trails and track. if you want to roast em in the straights 13/37 is almost like having 6th gear. Any DG pipe is a good bet except the all chrome one, you have to rejet the carb for that. and i dont work on my carbs so i am no help there. i send my carbs out. and the bore leave it as is. i only have 243cc and i roast 300exs and 350 warriors even the ocassional Blaster if they wanna race in the trails.
