1988 Quadsport 230 (Keep or upgrade to a 400?)
#11
If you can get an lt250s engine for a good price, buy it, its worth it. I have one for my lt230s and and I cant wait to start it up next week. I am currently putting new bearings in the bottom end since I had to take it apart to get the engine welded. But it will bolt right up, except for the top engine mount, but thats just one mount, so its not that bad. The 250s engine is slightly taller, but I would get it if you can find one. I bought mine off ebay, so I got lucky to find one. The wiring and everything else is a direct hook up. You may need to rejet your carb depending, but it even has the same carb, just different jets.

Back from the dead...
I'm bringing the quadsport back to my house this weekend, and will get started working on it.
Stage 1: check the compression and if it checks out, get the engine where it will start consistently.
Stage 2: deal with all of the safety issues. Front suspension wear, brakes and tires.
Stage 3: suspension update and more power.... (I'm dreaming at this point)
I made the mistake of checking out a new z400 today at the suzuki dealership. I really do want one of these, but I'm hoping that the 230 will keep me satisfied once it's running.
Even if I do get a 400, I'd like to make this so that my wife can ride it. She's not going to put up with that kick starter back kicking her too many times though. Has anyone swapped in a newer 250cc engine with an electric starter?
Oh yeah, I assume that these things won't hold up to the new ethanol laced gas? Are there any parts that will need to be updated to deal with that?

i didnt see it mentioned but you can get a 250s cam for it. its almost identical to a 230s stage 1 cam and its quite a bit cheaper. i put one in my lt along with a new dg pipe and a uni 2 stage. i geared it up a little too. its a blast to ride. i completely rebuilt it last winter. a little on down the way i intend to get a 400ex but ill never sell my 230. ive had mine for 10 years now. i know what you mean by an emotional attachment.

Got her home today.
This is what I'm starting with:
After a little work, I have this:
Uh oh, this is gonna be a problem.
That's after about twenty minutes of clearing dried gas out of the bowl.
The first modification will be to lose the headlight. I've always hated that handlebar mounted light.

It was left on after I tried to start it several years ago and it wouldn't start. I should've just opened the drain on it at that point, but I didn't.
There's no gas at all in it now, so every bit of it evaporated. I'm going to stop by autozone tomorrow and see if I can find something that I can use to clean the tank out.
