Default LT230S smokes bad

Hi everyone, first post so I'll try to make it short and sweet. I got in trade a 85-86 LT230S along with a small chinese brand birt bike for a old trailer that was given to me by my brother-in-law. The two previous owners thought that it was a 2-stroke and of course added mix to the fuel. Of course it smoked like crazy. So when I got it I cleaned the fuel tank and carb, changed spark plug and oil and oil filter and basically did a good look over the quad. I did some research here on ATVConnection.com and at Suzuki LT230S Vault (both great sites guys thanks) and found that it is in fact a 4-stroke. Now it does start up and run but smokes like you would'nt believe. I'm getting super black oil out where tail pipe and exhaust pipe meet along with the blue smoke out of the muffler. My question is, should I just rebuild the whole engine or just the top end ? Thanks in advance !

I have a 87 that was also a smoker pay very close attention to the rod bearing. The rod bearing is a weak point in the 230 motor I didnt replace mine when I did my top end and it locked up during break in. Really I recommend doing the rod, mains, and checking trans bearings, and gears good along with top end, especially if you are going high performance. just my .02

Yes but it would not smoke until it got hot. Thats if it has oil in the muffler. oil in the head would not last very long.
Its possible its the valve seals they smoke at start up then it tapers off.

Yeah it stayed smoking for about 10-15 minutes that I had it running and more when I hit the throttle. So I'll be doing the rebuild and probably a restoration on it too since its still in pretty good shape. If I dont find anyone local to do the crank I'll get with Vince. Thanks for the info !
