Rebuilding LT80 head and piston
#1
I need to replace a badly scored piston/rings and have the head bored. The piston and head are original equipment on this LT80. Sounds like the LT80 can last for years with a fresh piston and ring job. What size piston and bore will work best? Cylinder head has very fine scratches from bad piston. Traced problem to the 2 cycle oil pump with the plastic gear drive. The gear went bad and the motor received no oil. Any help is appreciated!!

Welcome to the forums.
Pistons come in .5mm increments.
The first overbore is a .5 over. Then 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0
You only need to bore enough to eliminate any damage.
.5 usually does it.
You get the new piston then have a shop bore the cylinder to it.
It sounds like your head is OK. It could be shined up a lil if need be.
I only use Suzuki pistons or Pto-X pistons.

You should clean/service the clutchs too.
You can mix fuel/oil at 32:1 and forget about that bad oil pump.
I can get all this done for you if you don't have a local shop.
I also have some freshly bored cylinders here that I can exchange. They are bored to 1.5 over.

Thanks for the reply Jack. I've done all the work to the LT80 engine with it still installed in the frame. I did notice that there is a collecion of fluid in the lower end of the block which may include pieces of my piston. I'm guessing I should pull the motor to clean out the fluids and foreign garbage. Correct? If I pull the motor, is there anything I should be aware of that may make this a challeng or make it easier? I'm also needing a seat. Would even take a seat pan and make it myself to save some bucks. Any suggestions?

You can clean the motor out with the motor in if you stand it up on end.
I cannot guarantee 100% of the piston/crud comes out, but expierience tells me that if you do the best you can, it'll be fine.
Please email me me about the cyl.
