Another variable here Im running into. The 230 before the top end was pretty sound. Not a peep out of it when I was running. No unusual noises at all.

After top end rebuild Im getting a fast ticking. I adjusted the valves a couple times and it has gotten better, but when warmed up remains more consistent. To add to this senario, I notice when I put my finger on the compression release and raise it a little, it quiets down some. Almost like the valve is knocking against it....

Any ideas. Before....nothing. After....ticking...when warm.
Hope thats not too vague.

I hope Chris Worthington doesn't buy a quadsport and show up here with questions lol!

Hi randy I've been on here for about a week seeing and waiting if someone could help me out on a issue I have with my 88 lt230,
The issue is that I found that it has a crack in the left crank case, I took off the left mag cover to take a look and that's what I found, but I do not under stand why does it leak from the starter.
My 230 came with the stock GOKI electric starter kit, Im thinking of buying a used crankcase to replace the cracked one I have, and also the mag electric starter cover.

Anyhow, thanks again for the assistance. This is a new thing Im learning. Youd think at 39 I may have gotten my hands dirty with this stuff, but it's mostly been cars Ive dicked with.

~sigh~ Now I have to find a slide, spring, needle, and all the other crap that goes to the VM26 that came with the 250. lol...
It would be easier to just put 230 stuff in it than the try and find 250 stuff. I think the 250 needle is the same as the 5L1 from sudco if you insist on tracking down 250 stuff.

The heatpump problem ended up being all I had to do was unplug a presure sensor that had gone bad. I found another guy on another forum to help. The "professional" I had out here had me changing circuit boards. He figures if he doesn't know what it is, it must be the circuit board lol

If it seems like you can never get the valves adjusted right, it could be the cam and rockers are worn out. And by that I mean the cam is grinding itself down along with the rockers. That situation will produce a lot of head scratching. If that's the case, you have no oil going to the top for some reason.

ANother source of ticking is the cam chain. Sometimes they just stretch too much for the tensioner. Now you have to figure out how far out the tensioner is. You can take the spring out, then take the tensioner out and see how many clicks are left before its fully extended. If its fully extended already, then that's probably the clicking. I've welded 1/4 nuts on the end of the tensioner before to buy myself more time. Sometimes I've welded 2! Chain broke shortly after that lol

Yeah I remember the gokis, but havent seen one in 20yrs so I cant remember where the starter is or imagine what your crack looks like. I'm sure a regular mag cover would work. but they're pricey because everyone breaks them.

Thanks for all your help randy.

Yesterday I was out driving the quad and it just.plain.sucked to ride. Then it was becoming more and more of a pain to start....then the chain lost one of the links...go figure.

Anywho. Spend some time with it today and and looked at everything. Come to find out the guy who did the work had the timing off.....COMPLETELY.

I don't even know how this thing was running. Its like the cam was 180 degrees out from the crank. I put everything back together along with the spare 250 cam I had. Cleaned the carb out which was gunked up and no more ticking. Just the sound of the valvetrain which I have a little on the loose side. Ill be getting around to that tomorrow. The compression is night and day on the kickstart too. LOL...Anywho...this has been a learning experience. Hopefully everything holds together!

Sure it didn't jump teeth? The cam can't be 180 degrees out. The plug fires every TDC, even the exhaust stroke. You're lucky it didn't bend a valve. A friend was riding (like 2 mph in 1st gear) and the chain broke.... it mashed the valves into little bits and pressed them in the head and piston like jewels in a crown. I heard the noise across the st and down the rd lol

Why do you think I know so much about these quads? Coz they always break! LOL! One quad I can say is built tough is the honda 250ex. Mine is a 2005 and its all original. Including brakes, bearings, airfilter, etc. I drive the 250ex 10x more than the quadsport, yet I work on the quadsport 10000x more (I've never worked on the 250ex). The EX isn't as fast as the S, or as fun, but its something I can hit a button and go and not have to worry about anything. The S I kick n kick n it might start, it will probably break down in the middle of nowhere, it rattles and clunks, everything is loose, brakes are paper thin, yet for some reason I keep working on it and pouring money into it lol

OK...so you caught me exaggerating some...LOL.

I wont even get into the details.. It was so off, it wasn't even funny. I don't know how this didn't grenade.

Thanks again for all the help. At some point Id like to get a bigger machine. For now though, this is cheap fun....time consuming...but so far cheap...
