I have an 86 LT 125. I have cleaned the carb extensively. I am having problems adjusting it. It runs very rich, so much that you can smell it out the exhaust and the spark plug is black from carbon. I have tried to adjust the mixture screw in and out to find the "sweet spot". I have also played with the idle screw. My problem is that I can not get the carb to run right. I can screw in the mixture screw all the way and the machine still runs. At other times, I can adjust the idle screw in all the way and it is not screaming Like I would expect. Any ideas? Turning in the mixture screw causes it to run richer/leaner? Which one.

 

does this have the clip on the needle like the 230s? if so maybe you have the clip in the wrong spot. i believe its 2 turns out for the correct setting on a 230s. not sure on the 125

 

I guess I need to take apart the throttle and check to see where it is jetted. I think, if I move the clip up the needle, it lets less gas through. In all sincerity, this is the orignal carb from 1986. I have yet to find a new carb for it, only rebuild parts. The float is the old brass one, not one I really like. But this thing is sooooo darn touchy and finicky. I guess I will pull out the throttle cable and look at the clip.

 

actually the brass float is the better one since the plastic ones will eventually go bad but takes a long time. yes moving the clip up will give it less gas. nothing wrong with the old original carb. if you want you can find carb rebuild kits on ebay from 13 to 25 bucks and just go through and rebuild it and it will be like new again. no need to buy a new carb unless yours is completely broke for some reason lol
