LT80 Problem after rebuild
#1
I have been having issues with my LT80 with it being difficult to start and and it would not idle. I pulled to motor out and found that the crank seal on the stator side was leaking oil. While I had it apart I changed the rings had the cylinder honed and replaced the gaskets. The stator was covered in oil so I sprayed it down with Carb cleaner and I put the engine back together. I noticed when I removed the cylinder it pulled right up off the piston but when I was re assembling everything it didnt go back on quite as easy. I made sure the rings were where they were supposed to be. After I got it back together I tried to crank it and it seemed very hard to crank, the battery is almost new and fully charged. It cranked over slowly at first and then it just stopped cranking. Now when I hit the start button all you here is the relay clicking. I have no clue where to start

You got them in correct.
I'd remove the top motor shroud so you can get at the fan to turn the motor over by hand. Leave the plug out.
If it's not turning easy, I think either the rings are not in place or you crushed the seal onto the crank.

The seal did seem to be pushed it some. Is it supposed to be flush & would that make it hard to crank. Also can I get back into the seal without removing the engine. Its looks as though it may be possible.

The Suzuki seals have a lip on them. You stop pressing when the lip hits the case.
I do question whether a crushed seal can have so much resistance that the reset blows.
Guess we'll see.

Well I tore it apart, I took the seal out and tried to crank it and it was still hard to crank, so we removed the cylinder again to check the rings. They were in correctly but I have a feeling maybe one of them moved off the little notch. We reinstalled everything and the bike started right up. So I think everything should be OK now. The reset was tripped. Thanks for all of your insight. Now that it runs it has earned a spot back in the trailer to use at the track
