Default 96 quadrunner dies, hard start when warm/hot

New guy, howdy...

I have a 96 quad runner 2x4 that, after about 2 hours or so of riding hard enough to get it hot, whenever I come to an abrupt stop, it will want to die and I will have to give it a decent amount of gas to keep the idle up.

I usually find myself slowly upping the idle speed the warmer it gets through a day's ride so that it doesn't die on me when I come to a stop.

What would cause this? If I let it cool down for a couple/few hours, it is back to normal and I have to back off the idle speed until it gets hot again.

I can also feel a loss of power when decently hot, not as peppy as it is cold.

I was going to start with valves, but that is my inexperienced guess

Thanks,
Josh

Welcome to the forums.
I don't see why it isn't as hot after 5 minutes of riding as it after 2 hours.?.
I agree, start with valves. if that don't fix it, i'd do a compression test.
Surely you've cleaned the carb.........
Silencer getting plugged?
Hopefully others will chime in also.

I havn't taken the carb apart, but it runs absolutely fine for at least an hour or more before it starts acting up, so I doubt the carb would be an issue, unless someone can explain to me otherwise?

Likewise with the air filter, although I check and cleaned it, it wasn't that bad.

Appreciate it.

All engines do that to an extent. When the heat finally soaks into everything around it, the frame, gas tank, seat, etc and there is no where for the heat left to go except the air, the engine gets hotter and runs richer.

Its clearly rich. Whatever the cause.

I've heard that floats lose their buoyancy after a while, so the bowl would have more gas in it before the floats shut off the gas, which would make it rich.

Maybe your exhaust is somehow plugged up. Maybe a big dent in the header.

I don't know, but its rich for some reason.

I will check on that and let you know, weather looks nice this weekend.

Thanks,
