Default new member VIN question - 10th digit not matching year

I'm looking at a pair of old 91-98 style king quads, and I really want to buy them but I have a concern. Seller has been helpful and has some history on one, less on the other, but neither has a title and the VIN on both starts with JSAAK42A512....

From all of the research I can find online this serial number is for an '01 but the decoders online say they're invalid check digits. The pictures appear to be the old body style with square headlights.

Has anyone seen a Suzuki VIN that didn't match the standard year layout:

A = 1980 B = 1981 C = 1982 D = 1983 E = 1984 F = 1985 G = 1986 H = 1987
J = 1988 K = 1989 L = 1990 M = 1991 N = 1992 P = 1993 R = 1994 S = 1995
T = 1996 V = 1997 W = 1998 X = 1999 Y = 2000 1 = 2001 2 = 2002 3 = 2003
4 = 2004 5 = 2005 6 = 2006 7 = 2007 8 = 2008 9 = 2009 A=2010

The "1" was a "T", I have pictures of the VIN tags now, both '96s.

Had a friend run them and they aren't listed as stolen.

Going tonight to check them out.
