My 96 KQ has an issue where it will refuse to start at first regardless of throttle, choke or spark but if I crank it for 3-5 minutes then let it sit for like 20-30 minutes it starts in less than a second. My fuel petcock is always set to ON, and when I crank it over cold the choke is on full. When I start it 20-30 minutes later it doesn't matter where the choke is it will always start.

I haven't touched the carb yet but i'm thinking that's where the issue lies.

That is definitely where I would start. Sounds like your idle jet is clogged. I would get some chem-dip and soak the jets for a bit.

 

Try the petcock on prime.

 

May want to check compression....if value is tight this will cause an cold start up very hard ... Im guess compression should be 150 to 200 pounds with throttle fully open during test...

 

if all else fails you may need a valve adjustment hard to start cold their too loose if its hot and hard to start the valves are too tight make sure the engine sits overnight before a adjustment
