Default Suzuki Eiger 400 starts roughn and gets hot.

Hey everyone,
I'm new to the forum here, and trying to figure out an issue with my
2007 suzuki eiger 400.

So a little history on what I've done to it.
1. Top end engine rebuild.
2. New muffler. (Old one was plugged)
3. Carb rebuild kit.

So here's what's going on.
I have to choke it every time I start it, even when it's 60 out. (It seems it shouldn't need the choke when it's warm)
Then I have to be real careful I don't drive it too hard at first, or it will die.
Gradually over a couple minutes I can take the choke off, and as it warms up it starts to run great.
The headpipe does sometimes get glowing orange hot, even after just driving for a few minutes.

Any thoughts anyone?

It just seems it could be running a bit better than this.

Not sure if it is getting starved for fuel??
fuel filter is new, and I know gas is flowing to the carb fine.

Thanks in advance for the thoughts!

Sounds like she is runnin lean.....real lean! if you changed the exhaust it is a strong possibility that it may need rejetted. If the header is glowing red then you had better get it fixed quickly or you will be rebuilding it again. Did you use a real carb rebuild kit or just a take apart and put back together?

It was smoking somewhat bad, and that's why I rebuilt it.

New piston and rings.
Had the cylinder rebored and the guy at the machine shop also put in new valve seals.

Yes I did use an actual carb rebuild kit with the needle, jets, springs, and seals.

Does a bored out cylinder require a change in the carburetor?

I had done it to a different brand quad before without changing anything in the carb and got along just fine.

Eigers were sent out of the factory set slightly lean. They do need choke when starting from cold unless it is a hot day. I would guess at a slightly plugged jet, give the carb a thorough clean, and see how you go. If the engine gets hot the fan should come on, and very hot, the warning light. Never known a four stroke with a plugged exhaust. I once had a Kawasaki 300 with a cherry red exhaust, turned out to be the cam "gone soft" hardly lifting the exhaust valve.

I have completely disassembled and cleaned the carb a couple times already. I really don't think anything is plugged in it.
I guess I'm not sure about the cam. It looked ok when I had everything apart.

Usually when an engine is bored oversize a change in jetting is needed. What doe the spark plug look like..coloration?, Should be gray/dark brown. If light tan or white then your lean.

It looks a little on the lighter side.

Where would I look for a larger jet?
And how do I know what size?
