Default 97 Quadrunner 4x4 no crank

Ok, just got this Quad Runner a few weeks ago and all seemed ok. I actually just used it 3 days ago and seemed fine, But, today it will not crank at all.

It's a 1997 LT F2504x4, according to the registration....

So, head lights are working so I know it's getting juice. Battery has a full charge. Hit the starter button and nothing happens. Tried to make sure it was in Neutral but the shifter is clicking the same up and down no matter how many times I shift it. Seems like it is not shifting into or out of any gear. I can barely see under the air breather housing where the shifter linkage goes in the whatever it is that it goes into. Anyways, it is moving back there so it is not the linkage itself.

I've only had it a few weeks so not even sure if it matters if it is in neutral or not, or if you can shift it when not running... But, I seem to remember that it would start in gear and shift when not running.

Neutral light was staying on all the time, but now it is not coming on at all. I can't even see where the starter is

Any ideas?

Neutral light has to be on for starter to work, so that is your problem. When not running you have to rock a bike backwards and forwards as you change gear to allow the selectors to slip into position. On some bikes you can override the neutral "lock-out" for the starter by having the brake light on, don't know if you can on the LTF250. Do not make a habit of starting in gear, the neutral lock-out prevents you putting strain on the starter and its gears.

ok, thanks for the response. Actually, yesterday I found the problem. There is a wire under the seat that looks to have been modded to ground to the body and it was broken. I fixed it and now it starts fine, but neutral light is always on.

Here is a picture of the wire. As you can see, the brown wire is grounded to the body. There is also a blue wire that looks like it was intended to plug into the spot where the brown wire is plugged into on the other end. I assume that is my problem, but I unplugged the brown wire and plugged the blue wire in and neutral light goes off even in neutral and it won't crank.

I guess I need a wiring diagram to figure out what else has been modded to mess this up.

One of my customers made me do the same mod on an Eiger. Neutral switch inside gearbox had failed so no neutral light. Quick fix is ground the wire so neutral light is on all the time and bike can be started without using the brake.

Ok, that makes sense.

Any idea how hard it is to change the Neutral switch? I looked around on the quad the other day and it looks like quite a bit has to come apart to get to anything at all.

No idea on the LTF, on an Eiger the alternator case has to come off and you get a shower of gears and washers falling out when you do remove this case, I needed a workshop manual to get them all back in the right places when I did the first one.
