My uncle called me up and told me his 07 zuki eiger 400 reverse wont engage. If can go foward but when he wants to put it in reverse, the light will go on but you can throttle it in reverse. What should i check first?
The cable from the lever connects to a lever on the gearbox, LH side, not far from the rectifier. I would guess the cable needs adjusting. Personally, I would disconnect it and see if the gearbox lever can be put in reverse by hand, check it does now reverse, and then adjust the cable to suit. Check you haven't overdone it, by ensuring Low still works. Another possibility is the detent spring loosened off. This is held down by an oversize bolt head like thing on top of the gearbox, above that lever, check it is tight.
Thank you for getting back to me with good information to start out at. I will relay this message to my uncle and see if his friend can tackle this/ Unfortunately i wont be able to help him until June 15th but i will definitely let you know how this all turns out. Thank you again for the help with a good start of info.
I contact my uncle today and for the 2007 Eiger, he informed me that the lever has to resistance. It just flops around.
Also,
He has a Suzuki king quad 2017 that just wont start . Will only click, click, click, I was thinking that if the battery is strong and the headlight is bright that it could be the solenoid of the starter. I just trip out that a 6 year old ATV starter would go bad that fast.
If he is referring to the lever on the gearbox, then it is a problem inside the alternator cover. Take it off and have a look. Things are fairly easy to get at in there but they have a nasty habit of releasing a shower of gears and washers when you remove the cover. They altered the number of washers too, during the Eiger's run. I once spent ages looking for a washer, I assumed had dropped out as I removed the case, only to find it was deleted on late Eigers.
To test a starter system, get a 12v test lamp. Put one side on the neg battery post, t'other on the starter live post, or solenoid "Motor" post. Switch on, press start button, if lamp lights but starter doesn't turn, faulty starter. if lamp doesn't light but starter clicks once, faulty solenoid. If solenoid buzzes, flat or dud, battery, or a bad connection on a thick wire, this includes earths, or a seized starter or engine.
I will be connecting with my uncle this weekend to work on the Eiger. He did tell me his friend fixed the loose cable that was down by the gearbox which now switches into gear. Here's the kicker. When my uncle was going to start the quad up to test the reverse engage, the quad gave a huge backfire. He couldn't tell me if it was out of the exhaust pipe or the carburetor but now the quad won't turn over. Do you think i need to rebuild the carburetor? At this point i have no clue what i should do next? Any ideas? I will with him on Maui from Thursday to Sunday.
Afraid I can't help on that one, an engine that "won't turn over" is seized. Could be a cylinder full of fuel from leaving the tap on PRIme, but on an Eiger the dreaded "magnets come off on the flywheel" and jammed between stator and flywheel, must be a possibility.
About weeks before, this quad was running awesome! Before the backfire, my uncle Wolf came over to fix the lever down by the gear box, we changed the spark plug, oil change with a new filter, new starter, battery has been always strong and just today I just swapped out to a new starter module. I did find this little golden pin that looked like when the carb backed fired, it maybe broke it. I will attach a photo. Came out of the carb. what is this?
Also, how do I fix something that is jammed between a stator and a fly wheel?
As I wrote before "an engine that "won't turn over" is seized" but will it really not turn over? That brass plunger is the choke and must have been loose. The plastic threads that screw the assembly into the carb seem OK, if they are, screw it back in the side of the carb and see if the engine will turn over on the pull start, if it won't on the electric.
