Good and bad-86 Quadracer
#2
i currently ride an 86 and i think its awesome. yeah people will tell you to avoid that year but the problems iv had have all been fixable and now its dang neer mint condition. the problems can be fixed ahead of time. like gusset the frame and check for cracks. a bad thing about this year is getting aftermarket parts because only so many companies make it for the 85-86. most make them for 87-92. if the quad is in good condition and for the right price id say go ahead and get it.

Thanks LBZ, I appreciate your help on the subject.Yeah the price is pretty good and I currently ride a TRI-Z, so lack of aftermarket is nothing new to me! The 86 Qracer seems like an aftermarket star compared to what I'm used to!I previously decided to pass on it, but now I'm kind of leaning towards it, you got any pics of your Qracer? Thanks again.

Thanks both of you guys.Juggalo You have a great looking Qracer! You'll be getting an email from me LBZ.One question for you guys, how do you get to the reed valves on those bikes? I heard they are down in the cylinder or something, whats that all about? Also how do they compare power wise to the same year 250r?

Gary,
As LBZ said their are a few problems with the 85-86's but, they are all fixable. While checking the frame for cracks go ahead and check out the swing arm for cracks too. Mine was already welded by the chain adjustment bolts. The after market parts can get hard to find but, if you have a Tri-Z you already know what that is like. If you can get one at the rite price I say do it. And you can make the "86" a very fast quad!!!!
Good luck, Danno

thanx gary. i have never messed with my reed vavles so i don't know. LBZ might. also i haven't been able to race a 250r. so i don't know about that. but i'm guess i would be able to beat an 86. in just about anything but a track. even there i might be able to. i have rode with a 400EX many times though and i have beat it around a flat track and in a drag race. the drag race was no problem i wiped the floor with him. the track was a little different. i started out in the lead but i spun out and he took it. it took about 3 more laps before i could get ahead of him again. my tires are very bald and i feel it would have been a much easier race if i had some halfway decent tires. the guy who rides the 400 doesn't suck either. we're almost perfectly evenly matched. out best times around that track are the same! people underestimate quadracers but their actually a very good bike. pretty reliable too. the only problems i have had with mine are a bad clutch (and that was my fault) cracked the frame in 4 places (welded for cheap but a very good job) and the counterbalancer broke off inside the engine (i have never heard of this happening to any1 else so don't worry abotu it)oh and my rear shock went bad (its the original shock never been rebuilt). i'm still on my original bore too i think. i'm very hard on my quad but it can take it.

well as far as the reed valve goes, iv never done anything to it because mine looked good yet. my swingarm was also cracked, but i got it aluminum welded again and its good as new. i have stock shocks front and rear and they are terrible. im getting a set of works for that problem. my quadracer is bored .60 over. i never bored it, the previous owners did. which is good for me cause i didn't have to pay for that.
the only thing my quad needs really is some seat foam. iv been riding it like that since iv had it this winter. i looked around and couldn't find any, so im gettin some custom made and making the foam lower, because i don't need it that high and its a lot easier doign tricks when its lower. i don't race, but i ride it like i do. im more into the jumping more than the racing. i guess iv never raced before and probably never will because my parents had to go threw that with my older brother, who broke both wrists, screwed up his back, tore his legaments in his knee, and a lot of other stuff on his kx 125, raced and my parents didn't like the whole racing idea.

The reeds are in the base of the cylinder, you have to pull it to get to the reeds. I also had a 86 250R for 8yrs. Both are very close in stock form in a drag race. Jumping amd handling goes to the 250R and hill climbing to the LT. Riding position I think is better on the LT. The breaking edge goes to the R. But these are just my opinions, the differences are not all that great. I've even rode Tecate-4's too. The tecate has the fastest top end of the 3 stock, but, has almost no low end. I found the tecate sucked in the woods. Heck I almost bought one before the LT, just didn't wan't to stick all of that money in it to get it to perform low end. Cool looking quad though.
