Question about the front differential on King Quad
#1
Hi,
I have a '95 King Quad which has been sitting in my garage for about 3 years with no riding. I am trying to get it up and running, and everything works except the shifter on the gas tank which switches between 2WD, 4WD, & differential lock. It seems stuck in 4WD and when I am able to shift it to Diff lock, it will no go in, nor will it shift out of 4WD to 2WD. Does anyone out there know what may be the problem, and how to fix it? Please email me if you have any sugestions. Thanks for your time.

I dunno nothing about that diff, BUT, here's my two cent's. The linkage may be frozen paticularly if it's a cable. If the linkage is good clear down to the diff, try rocking the bike back and forth while try to move it. Lastly check the oil or lack therof in the diff. if the oil has problems then that diff will have problems having sat for three years.

Two things Platingman, Put your quad in neutral and start it. Now shift to 1st gear. You should feel the quad move forward a bit. Press the throttle just a hair while pulling back on the shifter next to the gas tank. It should come out of the possition it's in. Now you can take the other shifter out of it's possition as well. If this didn't work, we have to start all over.

Thanks for all the replies! I have tried all of what has been suggested, and I have not had sucess yet in getting the bike out of 4wd. The cable which goes to the front differential connects to a lever on the differential. The lever seems to move to all three positions (lock, 4wd, 2wd) but it does not come out of 4wd no matter where the shifer is. Again, the bike sat for about 3 years, and maybe something inside of the differential is stuck or rusted. Anyone ever taken one of these differentials apart? Thanks for the comments!

I don't think you should start at the bottom of the problem Platingman. Try taking the cover off the top at the gas tank. You will first have to remove the handles on the shifters. Be careful not to strip the Philips screw heads while removing them. Now you can remove the cover by removing four screws and the gas cap. Place the handles back on the shifters to move them and see if there's full motion at this time or are they stuck in same location. If they are stuck, you will need to remove the cable from below to check the linkage at the differential. I know! It's getting more involved. I'll try to stay with you on this. If at anytime you feel I'm not the help you need, just say the word and get some real help. Remember, the TECH help here is also available to you. These guys live to talk someone through a problem.
