Does the gas realy matter?
#11
<< Also guys, just information that doesn't really matter but a friend that happens to be an Enviornmental Engineer, said, when the gas rating reads 87 octane, it's nominal. It can vary by four points either way, plus or minus. That's true, he says, of all the ratings. Just food for thought...

I don't know about the plus or minus four points where your from but the D N R of Missouri makes what ever you pump product says ( 87 89 93 ) it has to be above it. I have a few stations and they(D N R) check me twice a year.

I always thought high octane fuel was more explosive and gave a bigger "bang". but High octane fuel resists detenation better than lower octane fuel. The reason high octane fuel is recomended in hi comp engines is to resist detination (fuel exploding before the plug ignites the fuel, which a low octane fuel may do in some engines) If you hear a knocking sound (which is the fuel exploding in the combustion chamber due to extreme heat, without the plug igniting it.aka-detonation) go up some with the octane #, but usually, the manufacture's rating is what you should follow. Higher octane just wasts money. I hope I got the point across.

<< Does it realy matter what kind of gas goes into you atv? If i put super into my tank would there make any difference or a waste of money. >>
Well it really won't matter if you put anything from 87 to 93 in the tank unless you have a high compression engine and the 87 may burn a hole in your piston. If you have a low-to-normal compression engine than yes, the high octane will be a waste of your money. As stated above, higher octane burns slower. Fuel/air mixture is supposed to burn rapidly and not explode!! So putting high octane fuel in a normal compression engine should actually make it more slugish because it won't burn rapidly enough to push the piston down effieciently. This would make it a myth that higher octane = better fuel economy also. What do you ride? If it is a stock wheeler than high octane is probably a waste of money.
