I have a 1989 lt250r that won't shift past third gear. It just acts like it doesn't have anymore gears. Has anyone else had this problem? Is this a common problem? Also, If you can tell me what problems to look out for, I just bought it and don't know much about them.

Thanks

No it is not a common problem. It looks like you are going to have split your cases.
Buy the clymer manual it is fantastic for helping tear down the transmission. I have never split the cases on a motor before but had to do it this winter due to a bad bearing some worn thrust washers. It was soooooooo easy. Recomendation, don't pull the flywheel just remove everything from the right (clutch) side case.

Just tear it down, you will see the problem.

Sounds like a bent shift fork or something.

If you tackle this one by yourself... GET THE PROPER TOOLS AND A MANUAL!
Don't pry the cases apart with a screwdriver...

You'll kick yourself when you realize all the things that you will damage trying to get the case halves apart..

Unless you feel extremely confident in your abilities... get some help or someone to do it for you..

Good luck

Hey,

Thanks for the info, but I can't find the Clymer manual for the 89 model. They seem to be readily available for the 85-88 but not the later models.

Any suggestions?

The 88 motor is exactly the same as yours, mine is a 92 and the book was dead on for the transmission, now the suspension is another story.
