Super Speed Shootout......

how about comparing dollar to dollar, the cannondale being the top 4 banger at about 8 grand for the cheap model, compared to going out and buying a used lt250r and adding the differnance in aftermarket stuff, i dont think it would be much of any kind of a race.

That is what I was thinking.
I paid 3K for my Zilla, STOCK. (it will smoke a dale straight line even stock)
I am sending my motor in for this work.
"Complete teardown and inspection.
Machine cases and install main
bearing inserts. (permanent fix)
Bore and hone cylinder.
Stage two port job. (no reliability loss)
Modify stock head, polish chamber.
True crankshaft.
Clean and assemble engine with
new piston kit, main bearings, seals
and gaskets." (SEE MY NEW TOPIC TITLED "65HP ZILLA"
The work above is costing my 980$ out the door.
This means that I have a super clean and tight 88' Zilla, ***** to the wall
fast, and I still have 4K to spend on the suspention!!!!
I love older bikes. (the new technology is great for the sport, though!)

<< If you could build a 320 lbs 4-stroke with 50 rwhp I would be there in a second regardless of the engine size but they don't. >>
Yeah, the factories don't, but you could...
Yeah, 2 strokes make more power than 4 strokes, but still, I don't think displacement matters. The bottom line is HP and it doesn't matter how you get there. Hell, go all the way and build an 8-stroke engine with 1200cc to make 50hp, but it still makes 50hp, so I like it.
Displacement Vs. Weight? Yeah, displacement leads to weight, but more importantly materials used matters. Look at the CRF450R.
Frankly, I don't give a crap about the new 4 strokes because the factories aren't building them to be the fastest. They're actually building them to be slow. The old 2 strokes will still be king for a while, and that's actually pretty good.
Think about it, all that old technology in the junkyard is an improvement over what the old quad's have in them... That's why quading is unique.

I agree the factories are not building the current machines to be the fastest. I think they got burned in the late 80's with the consent degree. And I believe there is a limit as to the amount of factory horsepower you will see in a quad. They are trying to atract customers by the "bigger is better" theme. Thats why a 440 C-Dale runs with or by a 660R Yamaha. The 660's are factory "slow". You know and I know that Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki, and Honda have the technology to produce 600cc,four stroke engines making 60 to 90hp, they may not be single cylinder, but they can do it reasonably easy. We will never see it in a quad thanks to the goverment, the insurance industry, and parents who put 12 year old "junior" on quads he has no business on. Before you argue the last point just roll back the tape to 1989 and push play........I rode a brand new Zilla and can remember being passed in the Dunes by a 12 year old riding the same thing! Mom thought he needed the big machine to be safe!
Just give me a two stroke dinosaur, I'll put $750 bucks in it and have a ball!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!

I am a previous 2 time lt500 owner thats never seen a Dale in a drag.....read around.....looks like it takes a piped Banshee or a semi-mild Raptor to run with a Cannibal. If this is true, then the Dale would definately run with a stock lt500 in a drag.

I know we really can't but I'd like to see the statistics from the late 80s-early 90s to see exactly how dangerous those quads were. You would need to look at the circumstances of the accidents ( sanctioned racing or recreation ), the machine in question and most importantly the AGE of the driver and, if possible, the estimated experience of the rider in question...that's impossible to determine really but it matters. You know if every parent could buy the newly licensed teenagers a brand new Vette or BMW M3, I'd love to see the "stats" on accidents of these kids after one year as opposed to the teenagers in less potent cars like a Neon or a Ford Focus!
We all may be a bit biased, but I think it's safe to say that most (like 99%!) ATV accidents can attributed to driver error (with the sub group F'ing lunatics w/no helmets) and inappropriate ATV for driver age and experience and maybe even drunk driving...kinda like car accidents, I would say. Looked at this way, I'd love to see the "dramatic" increase in accidents of say a 25 year old male of above average experience riding a 250R as opposed to a 250X...hell even throw in a Foreman 4X4! Will it go off the charts condemning a 250R and warranting a ban??? I seriously doubt it.
And another thing, I think the receptive 2 stroke market is bigger than given credit. If the Big 4 re-released their racer lineups with some mild updates using the new components available like alluminum frames, hydralic clutches and some power enhancemet goodies on their stock ATVs for say in the $5700 to $7000 range...depending on how greedy they are, there would be tidal wave of anxious buyers flocking to dealers across the country. Back order in about 2 weeks! Then, prepare this release with some actual magazine press and promotion and the even many of the new big bore thumper generation would be won over.

I agree I would like to see more reviews on the old screamin rides, but ATV Sport does often do an article on a 250R. I love the articles on the R's but I would love to see one on a LT250R, or a Tecate. Throw one into the mix, compare power, speed, and all the goods. I really liked the article where they compared a CT powervalve R to a CT non powervalve R. One magazine re printed a shoot out they did back in 88 with the 250R, LT250R, and Tecate 4. That had to be my favorite publication that magazine had ever done.

Point in case on 2-strokes not getting any press....
Look at www.4wheelatv.com front web page. Almost any race story has a link for more info when the topic involves C-dales or other 4-strokes. Under March 21 articles is a short summary on Yokely and his Duncan Racing KXF250 Tecate 4 w/ no further info. They didn't even call it a Tecate 4 just KXF250. Maybe hoping people would think it was a Mojave!!There's another talking a about a DRZ powered Suzuki in another race w/ a little comment included that Jerimiah Jones actually won (on a 2 stroke 250R).
