how can i tell what year

There are several ways to tell the '87 model from the '88-90 models. The 87's have square upper A-arms, the 88-90 years have round upper and lower A-arms. The jug on the '87 has 6 studs and the 88-up has 7 studs. There should be a frame ID tag on the down tube at the left front of the motor. There is also a VIN stamped on the bottom tube of the frame under the front of the motor. It is possible that an older jug and head (1987 model) was put on your '89 Zilla, but not likely. Last the part number given is a Weisco ".040. The biggest overbore I have seen is ".120, so you have a ways to go. Good luck.

Easiest way is to check the overall year for the quad is to look at the VIN #. This won't work if the engine were changed out though.
