There are many variables as to why an engine could be hard starting.
The most obvious one is the level of tune.

A fresh top end and properly tuned carb. should start with 3-5 kicks on a cold engine.

Also, there is more technique involved in starting a big bore than you might think.

Holy cow, you better do something to strengthen up that kicking leg!! I can't think of any time since the overhaul I've had to kick more than, say, 4-5 times, hot or cold.......like Duneaddcit mentioned, it's all technique...Latah......

Fasternu,
Take into consideration that I only just turned sixteen and that ive only ever kicked over 125 and 250 dirt bikes, but maybe it is all in the technique?

My brother-in-law played with my carb and now it starts allot faster, usually within 5 kicks. He has time in playing with the carbs in his 'Shee, then I do one my whole quad.

I dont think it ever takes me more than 3 kicks. I got the technique down. Im just saying a banshee or 250r usually starts in 1 kick. At least all my buddys do.
