Quick question. My buddies and I do a lot of trail ridig and we are trying to look for some sort of communication devices that we can use while we are riding(rider to rider) other that a hand held where you would actually have to stop and use it. We want something that you would be able to use while flying through the trails one for safety purposes, two just to have fun conversing while we ride. I looked at the Chatterboxes, but it is hard to tell if they work with a MX helmet, and it is quite expensive. Has anyone used the Chatterboxes on the trails? If so, how do they work? How is the range? Clarity? etc.....

Thanks for any input.

Just get some FRS radios like the cobra's. They have the option for you to use a headset to talk back and forth. They are pretty cheap and have about 1 or 2 mile range. I'm thinking about getting some of these.

I was thinking of the Chatterbox FRS X2, but they are about $200, the FRS 90 only has a range of 1/2 mile, which we would be out of range very quickly on the trails. I wanted to know if anyone has used thses or if they have anything similar. I don't want to spend that much money and then find out they suck. I want something that will hook to my helmet and be voice activated so we would not have to stop to talk or have to fiddle with something as I am maneuvering through the trails. Thanks for the info. If there is anyone out there who has had experience with these, reviews would be appreciated.

Thanks

We've used the Collett comunicators for years. Started out with the 49mhz and upgraded to the 900mhz this year. The 49's had range from a few hundred feet to maybe a mile under ideal conditions. I don't think the 49's are available anymore. The 900's have a greater range and are more consistant. Realistic range will go from 1/2 mile to 2 miles. Once you get them adjusted for your helmet and machine noise the voice actuation works pretty well. We mostly use ours in full-face helmets, but my son uses his with a motocross helmet.

A communicator is a great tool and a must have if you are riding with kids. We actually don't talk on them very much, mostly to warn of riders or other hazzards or to point out wildlife. Voice acutation works OK, but does tend to cut out the first word or two in a conversation.

Collett is out of Canada, toll free 1-800-665-7888. When I ordered mine last fall they were having a sale on the 900's - $159.00. I think the regular price is $199.00. The also have a website; CollettElectronics.com (I think)
