Mine has 76 miles and just had first service. I was expecting to have 100 miles but between the weather and the dealer scheduling appointments 4-5 weeks out, I didn't want to lose my spot. The dealer told me not to worry about the mileage or the noise. He did check oil pressure and said it was perfect so a rod/bearing problem is not likely. If you haven't serviced yours yet, I might at least change the oil prior to putting 200-300 miles on it with the factory fill. I don't know if the factory oil is designed to aid break in with a friction modifier? Someone else here may know?.

I've had my share of motorcycles including 2 stoke dirt bikes, I-4 crotch rockets and V twin cruisers. Its hard to come from that realm into a single cylinder 4-stroke and draw any comparisons. My Eiger hasn't missed a beat since I've had it but my riding has been limited to a large sand pit near my house. The trust is building but it will be some time before it earns my complete respect.

As long as your not going alone, I wouldn't worry too much the ride unless the noise starts to change. The way I look at is this. Most of the time I go out looking for a challange... a hill to climb, a mud hole to travers or a jump to land. Some of the best memories and fun come not from an easy accomplishment but the challenge of a failure. Take the machine and go have fun. If the noise changes, gets worst or the thing dies completely, as long as noone gets hurt, you'll remember the adventure of getting back with growing fondness as time passes. Then any problem that exists will be much easier for the dealer to diagnose and fix.

Have a good safe trip and let me know how you make out.

My dealer told me the first time that the noise was normal, BS. I called Suzuki, they told the dealer to take it apart, bingo found the non-normal noise maker. Mine is 3 months old, 176 miles now, made after the recall fix!! So I suggest you have it looked at, do not except "NORMAL" as a fix. Mine sounded like a rod knock, the more load, the louder it got. Nice and quiet now!!!! Jerry

I spoke w / the dealer about this. He said mine was definately after the recall. Also, that Suzuki would contact anyone who had an affected quad. However, I will be keeping an ear out for this. I like this bike but anymore problems and it's history...

I had problems with my 2002 Vulcan from same dealer. So when he saw my quad torn apart in the shop he called suzuki and had them replace it before I had time to raise hell it had 350 smiles on it. The new 2003 pers like a kitten you hear more exhaust than engine sound. The wife told me after we got it home (I did not know it was going to be that much more quiet). She loves the new 1 even more than old.

Default EIGER starting

I experienced horrible cold weather starting with my 03 Eiger 400 4X4 but I found the problem. The problem is the air vent tube leading from the Keihin CVK32SS carburetor through a hole in the plastic bodywork terminating in a hole on the back side of the fuel tank plastic. My Eiger was assembled incorrectly by either Suzuki or my dealer. I am not sure who routes the line in question or when it occurs. The air vent line was routed to the edge of a plastic cover and bent hard around the corner instead of being routed through the as-designed hole that allows a smooth bend in the line. The 5 minutes of cold start warm up time everyone mentions is the key to finding the problem. When the air vent line is pinched and cold the ability to flow air through the tube is reduced. The air vent tube is located close to the exhaust header. It takes about 5 minutes for the area to warm up and then warm the air vent tube enough so it expands and relaxes the crimp allowing almost normal air to pass through it. I needed to replace the air vent line as it was permanently crimped and routed it correctly through the as-designed hole in the plastic cover. My Eiger would then start normally with full choke for only about 30 seconds accepting throttle inputs right after that. This was tested at 15 degrees Fahrenheit in Northern New York.

Good Luck
