I'm just guessing here, since I never tried it on mine. Do you have a headlight on it. If so try connecting it to the headlight switch.
If you have cylmer (sp) manual look in the back at the wiring diagram. If not go buy one. The 85-88 one is the same.
I wish I could help more, but not much into electrical wiring and never tired to hook and fan to one. It's a good Idea though. If you get it to work let us know how.

I could be wrong on this, but I suspect that your stator is not putting out enough juice to run both the quad and a fan. There are a number of companies that rewind stators and add lighting coils to be able to run accessories. Go to www.rickystator.com to learn more about stators.

I agree with MikeR. The headlight circuit on an LT250r is not going to run a fan properly if at all. Contact Ricky Stator direct, they can wind the stator so you can install a voltage regulator and a small battery.
