Default Converting full time 4x4 to selectable 4x2

Is it mechanically possible to convert a '98 Suzuki quadrunner 5 speed to selectable 4x2? Isn't the 2002 5 speed 4x2 selectable? Are there some parts I could changeout replace that would make this possible?

If you have a Quadrunner 500 which is 4x2 selectable, is this done in the motor/transmission or in the front differential?

Will the easier steering/handling benefit the cost of this conversion?

I am looking into doing this myself! Did you ever find anything out? I would assume you'd need the front axle from an '01-'02 Quadrunner? Or modify the front axle in the '98-'00 to accept a disconnect?
