Ivegas,
I have a piped and jetted 400ex and am in the market for a new machine. I have it narrowed down to a Raptor, Z400, or Predator. I have not ridden any of the three as I am having trouble finding a dealer to let me ride them. I do have a Polaris dealer calling me next week when the Predator comes in to ride it. I am still looking to ride the z400 and Raptor. Anyway, I have read all of the shootouts about the Raptor and z400 and I know the general opinion is that the z400 is the better machine for the money. Since I can get the Raptor for $6000 I do not care about the money arguement between all three machines. I think liquid cooling and reverse are great but if the Predator is that much more powerful than the other two and the handling is close.... well you know what my decision will be. I know nobody really knows about the Predator yet so I will keep my questions about the other two. Is the power increase very noticable between the stock z400 and stock Raptor? Is the handling difference that much between the two? I do not want to give up the handling of the 400ex. I would think the Raptor is close and the z400 is better than what I have now-as far as handling- correct me if I am wrong. I ride mostly fast trails and some steep coal hillclimbs. Again, I mostly want more overall power. The 400ex has to be shifted out of first right away. Second gear also does not have much as I often bog down at the top of steep hill climbs. I dd read the z400 has be be shifted more frequently than the Raptor. This means to me that the Raptor has a taller first and second gear-exactly what I am looking for. After all, first, second and third are usually where I am on the trails.

i have a new z400 and my friend has a new raptor. in the trails they are about the same but the z prob handles better. if you are just out in open fields racing then the raptor kills the z but in the trails the z should be your choice.

Discussion after discussion it still never ceases to amaze me. I have a Z-400, I love it, don't get me wrong. But I would feel stupid if I bought a Raptor (660cc motor!) and it was always being compared to, AND BEATEN BY, a 400 cc motor quad! I know it doesn't win ALL comparos but if I were to buy a Raptor it would have to STOMP the Z...but it just doesn't. Suzuki did a good job! I drive a '97 Cobra too, with a 4.6L DOHC. Technically it's a 281 cubic inch. It puts out about the same horse power as an F-body which has 69 MORE cubic inches in it's 350 and yet they brag about beating us WITH A BIGGER MOTOR, and cry when we beat them with a SMALLER MOTOR! Hmmm...wonder why those 350 boys cower away from us with the 351 under OUR hoods? Seems like a fair match to me! Laterz ya'll!

I would feel stupid if I had written that statement.

Bartlettracing,
I agree with you, from what I have read, about the Raptor really gaining more power than the Z when you start adding mods. That is why I am leaning towards the Raptor. I would put a full Yoshimura pipe if I got the Raptor. Dirt Wheels did a review of 12 pipes and rated it one of the best. It gives it around 46hp!! I think this would be noticably different than the Z with the same setup? I have not ruled out the Predator either. I know about first year bikes- I had the 660 Grizzly and had zero problems with it. The Predator is suipposed to be 45 hp stock! I know the test riders did not like the plastic around the gas tank and also said the suspension is not good, but I want to see how the production models do against the Raptor and Z400. I also know, however, that the magzine test riders seem to really like the Z so I hope they are objective.

Man im really getting tired of this crap about my Z is better than your Raptor. Its getting old I mean come on how can u compare a quad that hardly is detuned except the only things that were changed on it was the cams, carb, and the rev limitor for the z . But then u see where the raptor engine cam from *cough r6 motor *cough of course its gonna be detuned alot otherwise yamie would be getting suied left and right. Also the only reason peeps say the raptor is so tippy is well they dont ride it right or are just scared to since its a little higher than there 400ex or Z. If I was a beginner wanting not to much power but good handleing I would buy a z. But since im not a beginner and i've been rideing for a while I would most likely buy a raptor since I wont be left high and dry in the power department like the z since all I have to do is mod the raptor and can u say goodbye to your modded Z.
