LT500 vs LTZ400
#11
My friend owns a piped 400EX which is much like the Z400. He can ride most everywhere I can but I can climb any hill with ease but the big hills he can't quite make. We've switched bikes and I couldn't get used to his. Felt like a fish out of water. If you can't find a Z400 to test ride, a 400EX will do as their geometry is very similar, while the Z400 makes a few more horsepower. Personally, I would keep the Zilla, it's the dune killa. Best production dune bike available, bar none. Only a modded Banshee is better for sand dragging but not overall dune riding.

The zilla will bust anything unless it is a very highly moded other 2 stroke. The new 4 strokes would have an advantage on take off on low traction runs. The zilla has so much power it will spin the sh$$ out of the rear wheels and the new 4s will hook up better.

I don't think you can even compare the Z400 and LT500 or for that matter the LT500 with any 4-stroke. I ride a mostly stock 1989 LT-250 and my buddy rides a new Z400 with the Alba package. I jump on the Z from time to time and even compared to my lt250 it lacks. The Z is a great all around bike but it would need a lot more HP and a much wider stance for me to consider it. I have owned/riden the LT500, the DS650, 400EX and pretty much most of the quads out there. If you come from the 2-stroke world you better ride one of the 4s first because I for one have not found a comparible bike out there in the new 4s. The DS650 is simply toooo heavy and awkward in my opinion.

I bought the Z for my riding quad. I have a 250 and 500 quadracer they are being restored and ridden very little. I wanted them to keep because as the years go buy the will be harder to find in one piece. My 250 is almost done and I picked up the zilla about 80% done. I like the Z alot but the racers are my babies. When I get them done I will post some pics.

I just sold my LT500 earlier this year and bought a Baja X. The DS is an absolute turd in comparison. In fact its so under powered that I have no desire to go back to the dunes with it. However, I bought the DS for trail riding and abolutly love it (it's still underpowered though). I couldn't imagine riding a 400 in sand. I think it would be worse than riding a 250 two stroke.
