Eiger auto vs 5sp?
#1
Considering the Eiger 4x4. Not sure I like the idea of a belt driven tranny. What are the pros and cons of an auto vs 5sp tranny? Will use exclusively for deerhunting. Thanks for the feedback!

I've not heard of any Eiger belt problems. For your use, either will work but the auto will be easier to use. When I bought mine last year, my dealer claimed that the 5-speed will have a little more power and speed than the auto - makes sense to me.
I think you'd be happy with either one, I'm kinda old-school and wanted a 5-speed.

The 5spd only feels like it has more power because you can hold the gear longer. No heard of belt problems here, so for hunting I would recomend the one thats easiest for you. Its only $150 more for the auto over the manual.

I too bought mine for deer hunting and trail riding. I went with the 5sp because of the reliability of and the control of a geared tranny . I have not read anywhere about any belt problems on the eiger auto. The 5sp worked well with my sorell hunting boots on this year. When my wife is B**ch'n about shifting is the only time I regret not getting the auto.

The 5 speed has a lot going for it. With the low range first you can easily move at a slow walk and have great control when needed. If you are planning on putting on bigger tires it would probably handle them better. One thing that is nice with the Eiger is the great low end power of the engine. You won't find yourself shifting constantly on a trail, a lot of times I would just be cruising in 3rd 0r 4th without having to downshift for hills. That said, If I buy another I will probably get the auto. There is nothing like just riding without thinking about the machine.

Go for the Auto, F*ck that shifting $hit....No offense, but I have had both and I bought my wife an Auto Eiger and my daughter a Recon ES, then we decided she was too young (11) for an ATV, bought her a XR70, so I was stuck with the Eiger (I was going to get a Dirtbike or the Vinson) and my wife got the Recon, then I started riding it, it took about 2 hours for me to realize I was enjoying the hell out of not having to shift, and if I tow something I just put it in low gear (it has low and high gear) and it has ALL sorts of power and no jerking, and when I race my buddies, while they are busy shifting I have that thing wide open and just make them eat my dust.....hehe. I used to be the type that would swear by a 5 speed, but I have a lot more fun with an Auto, no sore legs, just ride and have fun, don't worry about what gear you should be in.. and on and on.
BTW I have not had 1 single problem with it, even in water or mud.....I WILL BUY AN AUTO FROM NOW ON, DON'T KNOCK IT TILL YOU TRY IT.
