Just go out and ride within your comfort zone!! Dunes are great, just take it easy till you get a feel for it. You'll most likely have a couple bobbles here and there but it's all part of the learning curve. Wish I was goin' too Have fun........

keep your revs up going up the hill.

Don't go flying over the tops! Sand dunes can crest and have severe drops on the "other side".

Personally, I get going as fast as I safely can before the bottom of the hill, downshift as my engine slows going up the hills, and prepare to stop near the peak of the hill. Sure, I stall a few times, but it's better than flying over (been there, done that, scared ****less)

Here are some dunes pictures
http://atv.corpsie.com/trip-04/ATV-trip04.html

If you click on "dune 3" and look towards the back, the last hill there had about a 45 degree decent on the top of the other side. You can't tell from the front side, that's the problem.

BTW: IF your riding buddies try to push you to go faster than you feel comfortable with, they're not being your friend.

TechTip 112 Don't stop going up hill.
TwchTip 117 If you are on a 4 stroke, stay in 2nd gear and ride it to the top.(be ready to turn out if need be)

corpsie said it! NEVER go over a dune at a good pace if you don't know what's on the other side! Drop off's and witches eyes (nasty holes that slope in and have an almost 90 degree lip/wall coming out) will pop up out of no where!

Also stay in your comfort zone!

And please take some pic's of the area! I'd like to see what the dunes there are like.

Are you going to be taken some paddles? If so, you will need them to get up the dunes and like all the others say, Ride at your OWN pace. I have been there and tried to keep up with my buddies when I started riding and all I got was hurt. yes and post some pics!!

Is riding in sand almost the same as riding in snow??? I have a blast in the snow, I would like to try paddle tires though. You can get on the snowmobile trails and go forever here in New York.

Been dere, done dat. I love Amargosa. Park on the side facing the paved roads. The backside is really dusty. There are very small as well as huge dunes there. Some nice big bowls up on top too. Stay off of the side which has the trees next to it! This side is extrmely loose and can swallow a tire and roll you over. I would suggest a trek around the entire dune area first to see where you want to ride then have a blast. Riding in a line with other bikes is a blast, but the point person should be experienced and know the capabilities of the other riders. Check an earlier Dirt Wheels for an article on dune techniques or pick-up the new ATV Sport for their dune technique article.
