Nope, if you go up one more you wont make it up a dune, if its like Dumont. I would if he needed to, go down a tooth.

The Z400 already has enough low end and adding one tooth to the countershaft sprocket is a very good move and the cheapest mod you can do. You end up with a longer powerband basically it takes longer to hit the rev limiter.

That would be fine if he was not in the sand, but if he goes up a tooth he will be only to hit secon up any hill, versus going down and him hitting 3, or forth depending on what he did to the rear sprocket just my .02 but ride in alot of sand so sorta know what i am talking about...

With countershaft sprockets so cheap, the best way would be to buy both and test for themselves. My .02 as well

I tested mine out at Dumont last month and if you are going to climb anything near the hills there then YES you will need to keep the one you have and wind it out in second or take a tooth away and wind it out in third. I know, I couldnt believe it was barely making it out there and I usually can climb any hill. Now, my Raptor was the same, but now that I dropped a tooth, it goes up screaming in third. In my opinion, you add a tooth and you wont shift out of 1st and if you do you will have to shift back quick before it bogs down.

I'm running one tooth down up front (13T) and stock rear (40T) but I have 22" tires (versus stock 20") so the end result is like removing a tooth in the rear. I do alright at Silver Lake (Michigan) but I've done the standard mods. When my Z was stock and running 22" tires, the dunes ate me alive.
