I never realized how great this quads were until I bought a 91 for my wife. The motor has pleny of power and is a blast to drive. You can pick them up cheap. I bought hers with a +2 Durablue axle, nerf bars, and a front bumper for under $2000. What a deal!

u should ignore the honda guys sure there great bikes but the ones i rode have poor bottomend power because they have no powervalve. only the 87-92 lt250rs have powervalves so avoid the 85-86 models unless u get a great deal they have a hand full of problems my brother and cousin both have 86 racers and have wrecked a few swingarms they crack easily around the carrier and various other places also they crack around the upper front shock mounts also only a 5 speed. i have a 90 250 with a fmf pipe and silencer k&n filter no air box lid 270 main jet stock bore works shocks and it beats my brothers and cousins by at least 4-5 quad lengths and i am much heavier it has beat 440exs spanked a few honda 250rs a 02 banshee with pipes lt500 they spin excessively on dirt and 1 yfz 450 the yfz also beat me the races where very close. i have pre ordered the vforce3 reed valve they said it would take 2 months and am going to have trinity racing do a pro mx port job with 39pwk carb and powerhead so that shouldnt happen again also just order gbc paddle master tires for the coal dirt hill climbs i do in pa

Nothings wrong with the 85/86. Not the fastest, but my 86 has always been reliable and it is faster than piped 400ex and z400 up the hills.
Also, isnt the 87-90 the same, then 91/92 have the upgraded rear suspension?

The powervalve is for the bottom end. It lowers the powerband down into the lower rev's to give more useable power, and then closes around 5k-6k rpm to place the powerband back up towards the top end.

IT IS FOR TOP END THAT'S WHY IT CLOSE'S AT A HIGHER REV and is closed at top end,and that's why mine is locked closed for Drag racing.

I have an 86 lt with no mods (yet) but it still rides with the best of them. my friend went out and bought a 1986 with al hole bunch of mods for his second quad and I still kill him on the track by more that a few quad lenghts! so like they say unless thier is a 200cc difference it all depends on the rider skill. i get really tired of hearing about how bad the 86 is all of the years are pretty da*m fast!

I dont think so...And I would be willing to bet yours is locked wide open for drag racing.Powervalves are meant to increase low/mid power by altering the size of the exhaust port in the lower rpm range, as the rpm increases the valves will gradually open till you reach a certain rpm where they will be completely open. The speed at wich they will open depends on many factors, there are electrical valves that use a small electrical motor who works in synch with the engine in determining the rpm and speed at wich these valves will open. The mechanical ones use springs that work with the engine exhaust pressure so the strenght of the springs will determine when and how fast the valves will open.
