how to break in a new piston
FACT that he does not apply...
Initial start-up is the most important step in engine break in.
Even though the machining process has been done to the engine before assembly, the engine must finish machining itself when first started. Starting the engine and letting it idle at around 1200 rpm until the head is hot to the touch is crucial to how long the engine will last. Once the engine head temp is hot, let it totally cool, start and let idle again until hot to the touch, let completely cool. Repeat this proceedure at least 5 times. It gives engine components ample time to finish their own machining of the new parts to each other. Starting a fresh engine and giving it hard throttle from the get go will cause new parts to chatter. This can cause premature wear on roller and slipper bearings, ring lands and pistons as well as cylinders.
At least he states warm it up first, so the engines own finishing machining process can begin... Then ride it like it was a rental !
In the past 27 years I can honestly say thousands of engines I have built is an understatement. I don't claim to be the best, as I have had one fail in that amount of years. Other engine builders like the legendary Hank Scott agrees with this warm up technique for initial break in.

Very good point Gimpster...
But inless you are doing the rebuild yourself, or unpacking your new motor from a crate, not to many people get to run there motor for the 1st time.
If your picking up a new quad/bike, from the dealer, who ever assembeld it ran it 1st, & he is the only 1 who know's what went on the 1st time it ran, Heck he could have road it up & down the parking lot in 1st gear pinned..(just sayin)
But very good info, sound's like you know your way around a motor.....

I work at a a honda dealership, senior tech (been with honda since 86) and in my spare time I build engines. My hobbies include racing upright Mini Sprints whitch is a midget chassis with superbike engines as power plants

how to break in a new piston
I bought two new Hi bird 250s. I assembled them myself, started them up, let them warm up and then tried to ride them like I sole them. They both have very little torque and fourth gear is useless. Can you give me some tips on more torque and speed?
Thanks in advance.
Thanks in advance.
