Unhappy '87 Mojave water pump problems

Water started dripping out of the wheep hole when I revved it up. So I pulled off the water pump cover and replaced the seals behind the impeller, I put it all back together and now at an idle water SPRAYS out of the wheep hole. I have no clue what is wrong!?! It's mind boggeling. Did I have to go further into the motor by splitting the case?

I replaced the whole mechanical seal. But there was an "oil seal" that went on the other side of the case which I didn't replace. There was no water in the oil so didn't see a reason to replace it.
