Ignition coil resistance too high?
#1
I just bought a 1987 Yamaha Moto 4 350cc quad for $300. It is in great condition and seems to have been well taken care of, but I am guessing it has been sitting for a couple years. It is not getting spark, so I went through the troubleshooting steps in the manual and everything checks out OK...except for the secondary resistance calls for 5.06-6.84 k-ohms and I am getting 7.8 k-ohms. I already ordered a new coil before finding this since the plug wire was damaged and taped. Does the higher resistance seem like it could be the problem? I am hopeful that I will get spark with the new coil so I can move on to the carburetor since I'm sure it will probably need some cleaning and adjusting.

Higher resistance means that something is blocking it's path. Possible broken/chafed wire under the electrical tape can do it. Also check the plug cap. Most now are resistor caps and rated at 5k ohms. Should ohm out around 4.8 on average. A lot of people over look caps as a problem, but if the resistor weakens or shorts out,you loose spark also. Hope the coil solves the problem.
