mudding with auto tranny
#1
i have always been a manual tranny when it came to mudding becuase you could shift to the lowest gear and still have the RPMS up. but i was wondering if an auto trany would be better or worse. i am looking for a used truck that i can lift and deck out for mudding and it is really hard to find the truck i want with a manual tranny. any opinions would be great. i am hoping to get an late 88 to 95 chevy 1/2 ton.

For rock crawling you can't beat a Jeep. Small and maneuverable.
If you get a full size truck, be warry of the GM 700R4 auto tranny. Unless you get it built up for heavy duty use, it won't take the punishment. My former work truck '91 GMC Sonoma went through 2 trannys. First one at 120K and the second one at 180K. This was with the 4.3L V6 (pre-Vortec). I'm assuming you'll be looking at a 350. I'd say try and get a truck with 4.10 gears in it. That will help with rock crawling. Then slap a locker in there.

My Ford is an auto, and does great in the mud, and it takes loads of abuse. I'd stay away from the new chevy models, my Dad owns a 2003 with less then 100kms and he is on his four tranny, I'm not lying either, then engine has great power, but the tranny's gears are made of butter.
