Default towing with a minivan

A friend of mine just did a 3500 mile round trip with his dodge minivan. It pulled an aluminum trailer with 3 quads on it no problem. He told me the tow rating on it was the same as a small pickup. His mileage was around 12 to 13 mpg. Just stay within the recomended likits and you will be ok.

I think it could be done, but definately stay well within the manufacturers tow limits and be careful to keep the trailer load properly distributed. You see minivans towing pop-up camppers all the time, and those are roughly the same weight you are looking at towing.

never mind how much power
think about the brakes , can the brake stop all that extra weight?

Put an electric brake module on the van, for the trailer But, like what has been said, follow the manufactorers recommendation.

I have a 2002 Chrysler Town & Country with an 1800# towing capacity. No towing package. I tow a 400# Triton 5x10 alum trailer with a Blaster(325#) and 300EX(375#). Of course these 2 quads are a lot lighter than a sport/utility. 2 passengers and say 100# of gear also. It tows fine. It cannot be towed in 4th overdrive gear though, so it's in 3rd. So at 70mph it's turning 3500rpm, but that's OK.

Worse comes to worse, I got 7/70 powertrain protection from Chrysler, although I bet that would be a hell of a fight to get it fixed under warranty

Default towing with a minivan

I have a 98 chevy venture that i tow with. its rated for 300 lbs. I have a 8x10 aluminum tilt trailer that is 450 lbs. and it tows my 99 polaris sport 400 460 lbs., an 04 predator 90 280 lbs, a 01 honda xr70 dirtbike 120 lbs and i have towed a 2000 warrior and a cr 80 dirt bike with all of my stuff. not a problem for the van.

THe only thing is i did get extended mirrors that i put on when towing. You cant see around a 8 foot wide trailer with a 7 foot wide or less minivan.

Hope this helps.

Look at my pics.

Bisho, do you trailer your quads in the winter? I see you have a salt shield on your trailer. Does it do enough to deflect the road-salt-water mess that we get on the sides of vehicles? How well does it work? My trailer is like yours. I noticed when I trailer in the winter, a lot of that road mess ends up on the first quad on the trailer. And after last winter, the quad started to show some corrosion that I thought came from this more than anything else. I don't have a heated garage, so it is not practical for me to wash down the quad in the winter either.

I dont usually tow in the winter. This is trailer is only a few months old. With my other trailer the sides and front are about 30 inches tall so i didnt have a problem. If im going to tow in the winter i will use the old one. The kids are not going to be riding in the snow.

I did get the salt sheild mainly for rocks and road crap. It does protect them but im not sure about the salt in the winter.

Hope that helps.

Bob
