Towing with Economy Car
I am getting a daily driver again since my firebird has too much motor work done to it. I hated my truck because of gas mileage and I am thinking about buying a cavalier. I am wondering if anyone out there has towed a 5x8 with about 400 pounds in it before. Now, before anyone starts giving me the "It can't be done, theres no way it will pull it" I have pulled a 16ft bayliner behind my parents Aerostar across the country, and then pulled the same boat with my firebird, NEVER having any trouble. The car I get will be a manual, and I am just wondering who out there has done it. Thanks! 'Carl

shoudn't be a problem on dry pavement ... i would use sync oil and change the trans fluid a couple times a year.
If you can get an automatic ... the manuals aren't as strong as the autos ... i know this sounds backward, but they don't expect you to have alot of weigh in that car and don't make the clutchs very stong IMO.

I don't see where it will be any problem at all. You'll want to check the specs on the Cavalier of course but most small cars, even those with just a 4-banger, can tow about 1,000 pounds. Your ATV and trailer will be about 600 or so. All this can be done with a class I hitch. Yes, you'll have to up your routine maintainence for fluids and your gas milage will suffer, but there should be no serious consequences to the car outside of the normal added loads for towing.

To add:
Just checked the Cav. towing rating - 1,000 pounds with the 2.2 L engine.

Should be no problem - I towed a small, but heavy wooden boat from Gig Harbor WA to Orange CA behind my lowered 4 banger 1980 Mustang. I was going mighty slow through the Siskyous and over the Grapevine, but it made it. I could even launch the boat as long as the ramp wasn't too slimy!

Our family bought a 1990 plymouth Acclaim (2.5 liter)(glorified K-car) and from day one we were towing a 12' jon boat loaded down with gear about 1000 miles a year.
from 1996 to 1999 i towed a Polaris SLX about 1000 miles a year.
I finally sold the car in 2000 with over 200,000 miles on it,,,,and it was still running fine. As far as I know,,,,the car is still on the road in NC.
I say go for it. Drive safely.

I carry my son's Eton 40 in the back of my "big hauler" a 1990 geo metro with the backseat folded down. The front bumper will hit you in the shoulder unless you are very short.!
Ya go for it. WE towed a 16' jon boat with all of the batteries and trolling motors, and lets not forget the three cases of beer with an 84 cavalier wagon. just be smart about what your doing, and you'll do fine.
