Default Cummins H.O. "plug-in" horsepower chip???

I have an '03 Cummins H.O. (305 h.p.) and am thinking about bumping the power simply and easily.

I am not looking for the full blown Gale Banks conversion and I am not looking to go big bucks as I am basically happy with the truck just the way things are. However, if anyone is familiar with a simple plug-in deal that will juice things up a tad, I'm all ears.

Thanks in advance.

This will start can of worms, I'm sure but...

I bought a Superchips re-programmer for my 97 Ford Powerstroke and I'm thrilled with it. But there was the added expense of having a set of gauges installed (tranny temp, exhaust temp, and boost) and a previously installed 4" exhaust system. It allows me to program in three different levels of "hop up", with only the lowest being for towing my heavy RV and my ATV trailer. And it's all done by simply plugging the re-programmer into a plug under the dash, following the instructions, and bingo, a new truck. And you can de-program it exactly the same way. Takes about two minutes. I think I paid $400 for it - off eBay. There's several other re-programmers out there and it's tough to decide which way to go.

But the good news is: they all work!

I have had an Edge Juice kit in my 02 duramax and I put one in my 05 Duramax with 4" exhaust and I wont have another pickup without it. The biggest diffrence is the Transmission wont shift down as fast because the change the throttle position. It will pull the hills better without down shifting. The edge has a digital display that has your egt, boost, back down and about 10 other things on the display. The edge will also Backdown your fuel if your egt gets to hot and you can set that at what ever temp. you want so you dont have to worry about having your turbo fins melt.

I have a 2000 Dodge Cummins and put an edge chip, afe air filter, 4" exhaust, egt and boost gauge for about $1500. I'm pleased with the power gain and amazed at the fuel economy increase. I did everythin at once so I cant tell what the chip alone did but I have no regretes with the changes.

If and when I get my turbo deisel I want to increase the power also. But I will have to convince my wife it is to get better fuel economy. What figures are you guys actually getting with these power monsters?

I get about 14.5 on gravel and short trips where im always on the throttle. When I get out on the interstate I get 16-17 if I drive between 70-80. I only have 4000 miles on this 05 so I'm hoping it gets better with time. I haven't got a chance to tow my fifth wheel yet but we are leaving feb.20 for Florida to do some riding in Ocala National Forest. I think it will get better to when the temp. warms up its been below 0 for along time here(northernMN).

I get an honest 17mpg average. Keep in mind I live in the mountains, pull trailers and have a dually with a 4:10 rear end. 3/4 tons do get better mpg between the weight savings, less tire rolling resistance, and highway friendly gears. I bump 20mpg on flat open road at 75mph.

Forgot to mention that I have the 6 speed so all the shift point altering is already done - by me!

If anyone has experience with just a chip or just a plug-in let me know as I see a dually in my futire and really don't want to go crazy modifying this truck if I'm only going to trade it in the future.

Just curious, why would you change the exhaust, doesn't it already come with 4" pipe? I can see changing the muffler but not the pipe. Anybody know the difference between the Edge kit and the Banks Six Gun tuner performance wise? Any preferences?

No, the diesels come with smaller diameter exhaust. If you are adding more H.P. you want to get the bigger exhaust, this helps the motor breath better and move that hot exhaust away from the motor. Heat will kill a diesel

Banks Six Gun tuner- Has dial to adjust settings as you go But, no read-outs

Edge kit- Programable, but not as easy as turning a ****. Has read-out on it's screen
