I got $12k. what tow rig should I get?

I should have taken a picture a couple years ago of my 1993 Plymouth Sundance 2 door 2.2 auto (165K miles) towing the 5x7 utility trailer with the 02 SP700 on top of it!!! It was towed across the ice a few times, with original suspension!!! First car and best runner I've ever owned. From 84K-168K miles put $100 into it besides regular stuff and the fourth owner after me drove the car to it's grave, a freak engine fire which burnt it to a crisp.
In all reality owning a older diesel can get expensive. Going over receipts for 2005 came across a lot of regular maint. things that really added up. You will have more parts to replace if the truck is four wheel drive and if the truck is 3/4 or 1 ton all parts are more expensive than a 1/2 ton. Parts for the diesel motor no matter what brand will cost more than a gasser. Cummins and International dealerships will land you a better price than Ford or Dodge but most parts are kind of expensive when you start talking $10,000 motor replacement!!! Last I heard was Ford still had some long block 7.3 motors with a US price tag of $14,000 and Canadian was close to $20,000!!!
For a first truck I'd recommend gas unless you really need a tow machine. Short trips are not good for a diesel vehicle either. Diesel fuel has been higher than gas for over a year. Diesel resale is much higher than gas however.
Most diesel oil pans take 3 times more oil than a gas motor. You need to replace the air and fuel filter on a regular basis and they both will cost more than a gas motor. Some things to keep in mind if deciding what kind of motor to buy.
Good luck on your purchase.

I still beleive in the diesels, but I agree that if its not a hobby(working on your truck) that a gasser would be a good choice. Little more than a subaru, but look into the ford or dodge V10's, they are dirt cheap, get relativly good milage while towing,(10ish) to bad its the same empty. But the money you save on the purchase price of a diesel pays for alot of gas.
An oh yea, the reason you don't see cummins prices, because they never need changing. But don't worry guys ford makes a great product
