Default Chevy fuel mileages

I'm looking at getting another truck and was wondering what the fuel mileages might be. My GMC 1500 with the 5.3HO is getting around 17 MPG. What would the 2500HDs be getting with the 6.0 gas and 6.6 diesel? My parents are saying that I can't get a bigger truck unless the mileage is pretty similar.

my dad 6.6 liter got 19 on the hiway before. Its never done worse than 15 and thats pulling a 20 foot enclosed trailer. The 6.0 would get way worse than the diesel and your 5.3, my dad got this fuel milage only after he put the 4inch exhaust, K&N Filter and hipertech programmer. this helped i get about 3 to 4 mpg better than stock. He could probly get better than what he gets if he could keep his foot out of it.

Neither gas engine in the 2500HD will get you near the milage of your 5.3L. Unloaded highway milage with the 6.0 should top out about 14, with the 8.1 you're looking at maybe 12. Overall average for both will be less. Once you start to tow it will really drop, in fact after a certain load point, the 6.0 milage will drop below that of the 8.1. When towing my flatbed with 5 or 6 ATV's aboard I get anywhere from 7 to alost 10 MPG highway with the 8.1.

The Duramax is certainly the way to go if you are towing anything large. Milage reports vary - some get 12MPG highway while others report 19 or 20 - all unloaded. It seems like the average D-max milage stays around 14 to 15 mpg. Moving up to a 2500 from a 1500 is a big jump in weight. Toss in the bigger engines and it's hard to beat your current fuel milage.

I know that the mileage won't be as good as my 5.3. I go through a tank of gas once a week as it is now just going back and forth to school so my fuel bill could get up pretty high. I won't be pulling a lot, but when I do, I'd like the extra capabilities of the 2500HD. Right now, my 1500 doesn't have a problem pulling our lawnmowers but it does take some effort to pull our compact tractors, and I'd like the ability to pull larger equipment when the time comes. Basically I have to convince my parents, that the cost won't be much more than it is now, which is looking pretty doubtful now that diesel is more expensive than gas too.

Never heard of a 5.3HO. Can you elaborate?

I believe it just came out in 2005. It is aluminum block and puts out 310hp compared to the 295 of the regular 5.3.

Looked at both when I bought the wife's 1500. I wanted the 1500HD for the towing capacity, but the ratings were 12/16. If I wouldn't have to listen to someone whine about filling the tank twice week, at 66 dollars at tank (3.00 per gallon then), I would have bought it. Just have to settle for a smaller trailer now. According to it's fuel monitor, it's getting 17 mpg in the city. Not bad, considering the Dakota we traded in (4.7 V8) was only getting 19, and had a lot less towing capability. Did get the 3.73 rear end instead of the standard 3.23.

I have an 01 2500HD Crew Cab with the 6.0 liter engine. It gets a little over 15, not pulling a trailer, 14 pulling my Rockwood Popup camper, and 13-14 pulling my tandem axle flatbed, milage varies according to load. Of course, since I live in the flat lands of Kansas, the mileage I'm sure is better than if I lived in the hills of say, Arkansas, and carrying the same cargo.

When comapring a Diesel to a Gas engine, you really need to factor in what you are hauling. No ATV'r is going to outhaul a gas engine towing a string of ATVs. You should keep in mind that Diesel is higher, by quite a bit than even Premium gas and that the Diesel engine is going to add thousands to the price tag. People that buy a Diesel and get their moneys worth are people who keep their trucks for at least a 100K miles. And at the current diesel prices, a 100k miles is probably breaking even cost wise. Unlike years past, those used diesels sitting on car lots are not bringing what they used to, the resale is just not as good. If you pull a massive load, yes you really need that deisel. The trucks that are bringing the highest resale value in my area of the 2500hd with the 6.0 liter engines, dealers just don't wnat to trade for the 8.0 equipped trucks like they used to, and for good reason.
