where to weigh a trailer
#1
Any suggestions for a cheap (maybe free) place to go to find out how much my trailer weighs? Can I just stop at one of those weigh stations out on the freeway. Would they weigh for me? Or are there places around towns that do that kind of thing?

Truck stops are usually your best bet. Cat Scales, J-Scales, interstate scales, and the like. Usually you can also swing by some grain places and ask them nicely. Dont go to a weigh station. You are basicly asking for a vehicle inspection, and could lead to larger problems (I am DOT Certified, I should know). Best bet is the truck stop. They charge 7-9 dollars. not bad.

I agree you dont want to pull into a weigh station unless you have to lol
Like he said most good truck stops have a scale. I think the one close to me was $6 last time I was there but havent drove a truck in a few years.

It sounds odd, but your local dump (land fill) should have scales too. Ours requires a DL with a local address and a current water bill.

2xSurvivr,
If you've got any old scrap metal laying around, load it up on your trailer and go to a scrap metal recycling place. They will weigh your loaded vehicle and trailer on the way in, and then weigh it as you're leaving to get your total load weight. If you don't have any scrap metal, go driving around on some gravel roads and look for some old washing machines in the ditch. You probably have you vehicle weight listed somewhere on it, so you could just do some math and get to the trailer weight. If you have the dimensions of your trailer, there's probably a lot of people on the forum who could give you a pretty close estimate.

As soon as I get modifications done to my trailer, I'm going to take your advice, toehanus. I've got the legs and springs to an old trampoline cluttering up the backyard. That'll be enough for scrap. Thanks for the suggestion.
